The English Podcast TRAVELING WITH ENGLISH was conceived with the intention of demonstrating how to travel around the world communicating with ease. The conversations in this first series of Podcasts for English learners are aimed at the low intermediate level student.
The conversations: word phrases, questions and answers are casual in their tone. As you will notice contractions are often used, e.g., “I’d like to…”, “Let’s go…”, instead of “I would like to…” or “Let us go…”, these latter forms being a more formal way of writing and certainly of speaking. Though there is a feeling of being casual and relaxed in the setting and situation there is always a sense of being respectful towards the other person.
The speaking style is natural. You will have the opportunity to hear, practice and learn important travel-phrase speaking styles. For the more serious and fun learner, you will hear a natural rhythm, pitch, and flow of spoken English. Different changes in the voice will imply different meanings.
Today, about 1,600,000,000 people use English as a first or second language. The Oxford English Dictionary states that there are well over 600,000 English words with a further 500,000 technical and scientific words that have become part of English usage. English is an organic language. It is growing and evolving rapidly. It is nurtured by the local cultures that add new words and often slightly change the grammar.
Though in these podcasts you will hear an American man and a Canadian woman speaking, there are endless variations in dialects heard around the world. Fortunately for all of us, there is a “standardized” English that is being spread by the internet and the global media. The main regional standards of English, until very recently, have been US and Canadian, British, Australian, New Zealand, Indian, West Indian, and South African. We are now experiencing a burst of new English expressions, voices, and sounds arising through-out Asia, Africa and the Middle East giving even greater texture and color to the English language.
Today, English is the language most used in business and scientific journals, along with being the official international language for airports and aircraft and, among countless other venues, the International Olympic Committee.
